Originally founded as the HVLS Fan Company, the business eventually adopted the nickname customers kept using when calling in: “Are you the people who make those big-ass fans?”

While many industrial companies relied on technical jargon and conservative branding, Big Ass Fans built its identity around personality, memorability, and unconventional thinking. Branding reflected the same approach that drove its engineering: listen to customers, solve real problems, and act decisively.

Turning Comfort into Business Strategy

Big Ass Fans did not grow by selling fans. It grew by selling measurable outcomes. Inside industrial facilities, heat has enormous financial consequences. By cooling workers through elevated air movement, facilities can recover productivity lost to extreme heat while also reducing the need for heat-related work/rest cycles recommended by NIOSH and referenced by OSHA for protecting workers in hot environments, which can significantly impact operational uptime (NIOSH, Occupational Exposure to Heat and Hot Environments, 2016, Table 6-2; OSHA Heat Stress Guidance). In conditioned spaces, improved airflow also allows operators to raise thermostat set points, cutting HVAC usage and lowering energy costs by as much as 20 to 30 percent.

Engineering around Real Problems

One of the company’s strongest differentiators is the way it approaches customer problems. Rather than selling standardized equipment, Big Ass Fans builds custom airflow solutions tailored to individual facilities. Using proprietary modeling software, teams analyze how air moves through warehouses, loading docks, and production floors before designing systems specific to each environment.

That formula has helped it accumulate more than 218 patents in the United States and nearly 800 worldwide while steadily expanding across industrial, commercial, and residential markets.

Larson emphasizes that workers operating inside warehouses and factories do not always have a strong voice when workplace decisions are made. Yet they are often the ones experiencing exhausting temperatures, physically demanding labor, and uncomfortable environments every day.

Big Ass Fans believes airflow can materially improve those experiences. A global footwear customer learned that firsthand after struggling with warehouse temperatures approaching 95 degrees. They faced declining productivity and employee retention issues during summer months before Big Ass Fans created a custom airflow solution for its 270,000-square-foot facility.

After installation, the client reported an eight percent productivity increase, generating ~$2,000 per week of additional revenue during the hotter months, stabilized retention, and lower energy consumption.

But the most memorable feedback did not come from a spreadsheet.
